Our client needed a lever arm on a machine, including a right-hand and left-hand version for their daily processes.
The client possessed a 3-D scan, but required a fully dimensioned, feature-driven model. They needed to reverse engineer the part, but didn’t have additional engineering power during a busy business quarter.
The client sent over the steel part that featured several complex curves. Our team hand-measured the part and created a fully dimensioned SOLIDWORKS® model and subsequent drawing package.
We also included two configurations that could be used depending on the method of manufacturing: one for casting and one for machining. For the right- and left-hand features, the client requested separate part files (instead of using a CAD mirroring feature), so each part was drawn individually. Our client also requested two distinct castings.
Ultimately, we reverse-engineered a part that was no longer available from the original vendor. Finite worked with the client to understand the function of the part and its place in the machine and developed a future manufacturing strategy to create a 3-D model and fabrication drawing package.
We created a single casting that could be machined to either a right- or left-hand solution with minimal material waste. LMC was happy to save on unique casting costs, requiring one cast part instead of two. Our client did not experience any delays on their timeline, allowing them to finish their project on time and within their budget.
