We gave our stamp of approval to a steel equipment supplier.

Company Overview
A manufacturer-supported supplier of steel shipping racks for a variety of industries since 2000, SPS Ideal Solutions creates custom designs to the specifications of each client. Key markets they support include flexible packaging film, film for the tape industry, steel, aluminum coils, fabricated components, vehicle panels, and finished engines.
Project

A client of SPS Ideal Solutions required a stackable rack for coils weighing 15,000 pounds. A major steel fabricator from flat coil stock, the client wanted to use SPS’s model for stacking two coils high with a 3-to-1 safety factor. Our client worked with us in the past on a project for ocean transport and knew we had the expertise to assess their project for any safety concerns. The client asked Finite Engineering to validate their design and affix their Professional Engineering Stamp to confirm that there were no possible design flaws.

Challenge

Our client designed a model using their SOLIDWORKS® finite analysis program, but they needed validation on the design from a professional engineer. They had confidence that their design was structurally correct, but they required a design review by a professional engineer before moving forward. With a plan to roll out the design to 14 plants across the United States, the design needed to be 100% correct.

Solution

As Finite Engineering examined the safety of the solution, there were several factors that needed to be considered. The client was changing the design in order to meet safety requirements for the coils. The tubing design was kept below 900 pounds to support cost-effective welding times and load limits on the automated weld centers of manufacturing. The key to meeting these specifications was keeping the stacking to two-high with a safety factor of three. Another factor playing a role was the weight limits on powder coating operations, and line-hanging restrictions on the powder coating had to be considered.

Elements of this design were entirely innovative and new. Our client included a bayonet design for a removable corner that would offer strength for transportation, powder coating, and a welding line.

Results

Finite Engineering verified the safety of the design for our client, enabling them to move forward with a viable solution for their client. SPS Ideal Solutions has built four prototypes for their client’s review at two of their 14 plants, resulting in an order of approximately 3,000 units.

Finite Engineering and SPS Ideal Solutions are dedicated to delivering highly specific solutions customized to the client’s requirements and a commitment to quality, timeliness and cost-efficiency. Our work set the foundation for a successful partnership and, in this case, a large order for our client.
